NIGMS and Scholastic bring you our latest issue of Pathways, which focuses on superbugs—infectious microbes that can’t be fought off with medicines. Viruses that can’t be prevented with vaccines, such as the common cold, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria both fall into this category.
Pathways, designed for students in grades 6 through 12, is a collection of free resources that teaches students about basic science and its importance to health, as well as exciting research careers.
The superbug issue will provide information about:- Differences between bacteria and viruses
- Ways in which some bacteria are beneficial
- Factors that make some germs superbugs
- NIGMS scientists who study infectious microbes and why
- Steps we can take to limit the spread of superbugs and other germs

Pathways [PDF] was distributed to teachers as a special insert in the October issue of Scholastic’s Science World magazine, and anyone can access and download materials for free on the Pathways website. Collections include student magazines, teaching guides, videos, and interactives. Free print copies of the first three issues are available for order, and copies of the current issue will be available soon.
